the vatican on february 28th, the church says he will go live for a while in castle gandolfo, which is the pope's summerout house in a small town outside of rome. he will live at that castle while construction work is done on a cloistered monastery inside the vatican complex. then when the construction is done, he will move back into the vatican. and living in that cloistered monastery, provided that papal cloistering is like other kinds of cloistering, i think that means he will have no contact with the outside world while he lives there. he will be closed off. in any case, the cardinals will then meet, they say before the end of march, to choose pope benedict's successor. and then we will have two living popes, or one living pope and an ex-pope. but there is a plan. before we goat the drama and the political and theological import of the choosing of the new pope what is remarkable here just organizationally is there is an agreed upon and accept wade forward in an instance like this. there is a plan for how this goes, this thing that last happened in the early 1400s. is this like p

in vatican analyst john allen. i don't know if you heard what the sister said but she's upset because there are no women involved in this process and the selection of a new pope, that's not likely to change, is it? >> reporter: no, i mean i think the simple fact to understand about this conclave is that all 115 cardinals who will be voting were appointed either by john paul ii or benedict xvi and on the big picture issues they are all of one mind. i think it's quite unlikely the next pope is going to ordain women or repeal church teaching on abortion or gay marriage or those kinds of issues. now on the other hand, i would certainly say from my own experience of talking to cardinals the more thoughtful among them realize the church has a woman's problem. they understand there are a lot of sisters who feel the same way as our guest does and it's not just nuns, lots of women generally feel that way. i think the next pope will face this difficult challenge of trying to reach out to women and assuring them there's a place for them in the church while at the same time drawing a line in the

's a lot of symbolism here, a lot of ritual. but it's not something that the vatican has done in over 600 years. this was a surprise when he announced that he would be resigning. what do we know at this point as to why? >> i think we take him at his word in the sense that he's 85 years old. he does not feel that he has the energy or the -- really the ability anymore to carry forward the work of the church. i think there's always vatican intrigue. that's a redundant phrase. and i think we'll continue to hear things about leaked papers and potential complicit in different things. but my own sense from talking to friends who -- friends who know friends is that this was, in fact, a surprise. it is what it appears to be. and he's -- you know, this is a man who -- i don't think this man has been forced to do anything in his whole life. you know, he's a very -- a formidable figure. one view of it's stubborn. the other view is unflinching. and so i don't think he's pushed around very much. >> right. which really doesn't match resigning from this position. in some ways there's a lot of questions i
